Testing 3 phase equipment presents particular problems that can’t be solved in the same way as testing single phase equipment. 3 Phase equipment uses electro mechanical switches called contactors. Unlike normal switches that can simply be turned on and off, contactors must be connected to a power source in order to operate. In addition, 3 phase machines are often complex in their design with many different operating modes. Motors may test OK when stationery but present a problem when spinning at full speed. Moving parts may only be shorting momentarily when moving but test perfectly well when at rest. For single phase equipment either insulation tests or earth leakage tests can be performed with earth leakage being the most preferable. With 3 phase equipment, earth leakage tests are the only way to be sure.
This means that to properly test 3 phase equipment, the machine must be connected to power and running in normal operating mode. To perform the tests a technician is required to use a 3 phase tester or adaptor such as shown to the right. If your current test and tag provider doesn’t run your machines when doing testing, he may only be testing the cord, not the machine.
